It may sound silly but in order to stop your dog from barking you must first teach him the bark command.
Give your dog the command “Speak” and have someone immediately make a noise such as knocking on the door- that is sure to make the dog bark. Let him bark two or three times then say good boy and stick a tasty treat in front of his nose. When he stops barking to sniff the treat praise him and give him the treat. Repeat until he starts barking as soon as you say “speak”. Once your dog can bark on command then you can teach the dog the ‘QUIET’ command.
Start in a calm environment with no distractions and tell your dog to “SPEAK” When he starts barking say “QUIET” and stick a treat in front of his nose, praise him for being quiet and give him the treat. Make a game of it tell him to ‘Speak’ and praise profusely then tell him ‘Quiet’ and give him a treat. Leave longer periods of quiet before giving the treat. Dogs soon learn this as they are much brighter than people think.
