As early as possible, establish sitting as the status quo for greeting people. Make sure each family member, visitor, or stranger has the puppy sit before they say hello, praise, pet or offer a food reward to the puppy. Ask the puppy to sit (then count to five in your head), then give it a reward or praise or a pat or even better all three! Counting to five before we give the puppy attention teaches the puppy to sit and also wait. In no time at all, your puppy will learn to sit automatically when people approach. Sitting for praise or a food reward when greeting people certainly beats jumping all over them. From the dog’s viewpoint, sitting for attention, affection and treats certainly beats getting punished for jumping up.
