They whittled down the field using the following evaluation criteria:
• Removed products where the first ingredient was not a meat of any kind
• Removed products containing corn, soy, wheat, grain, or flour
• Removed products containing beet pulp or sugar
• Removed products that contained by-products or sauce
• Reviewed brands for recalls, ingredient sources, history, and customer satisfaction
• Reviewed the remaining formulas based on the best ratio of protein, fat, and carbs, as well as the source of protein
This reduced the field from 2219 dog food formulas to just 119 from only 15 dog brands.
